Head On Over..

...to Kitty and Buck today, because I'm guest posting over there about branding your blog/business!

One of the problems I always notice bloggers struggle with when they start is giving their blog a focus. So, using some lessons learned from the advertising industry I've tried to give my advice on the subject :) I hope you'll all check it out!

The Story Behind The Scar: Jessie's Story

Finally time for a part two in my Story Behind the Scar series! For those of you who missed the first post, you can read my scar story here. If you don't feel like going back to see why I started the series, here's the super fast version. While working on a project at my internship, I made the obvious realization that everyone has scars and every scar has a story. I got really interested in hearing how people got their scars and decided I wanted to share my own story with my blog readers. In return, I hoped that people would contact me to have their stories featured as a part of my series so I could hear more stories!

The lovely Jessie from Young Georgia Love has agreed to share the story behind her scar on my blog today! Her story is definitely an extremely compelling one... It had me on the edge of my seat, so take a look below to check it out!

Hey, y'all! My name's Jessie and I'm coming to you over from Young Georgia Love! I absolutely loved Lindsay's scar story idea and wanted to jump right on it! So, here I am, sharing my story with all of you.

My scar story is a little, well, long. It started two days before I actually got the scar, my sophomore year in high school. You see, I got a stomach ache. Only it was different than any other stomach ache I had ever gotten before. I was nauseous and throwing up and hour before my stomach erupted into a pain that caused me to buckle over in tears. I told my dad about it, and he thought maybe I was just a little hungry. We went to breakfast, but when the food arrived on the table, it made me so sick to look at, that I became even more ill.
That night, my mom was having a party. She set me up in her bad and told me to call her if I felt any worse. About an hour in, she came and checked on me. What she saw was a fevered mess of a daughter. One second I'd feel as if my entire body was on fire, and the next I'd be shivering so violently from the cold encircling every part of me. My fever was 104 and my mother quickly called my father, telling him to meet her to take me to the hospital.

Once my dad had picked me up and I was in his car, I was at a point where walking was impossible. I could not breath and everything was spinning. I don't remember the car ride but I remember the waiting room at the hospital. Waiting room nurses came and checked on me intermittently, "looks like appendicitis; you should be taken back any second now."

An hour and a half later, I was finally being taken back and the nurses predictions were correct: appendicitis. At least, it soon would be. My appendix was failing and I would very soon be very ill once it completely failed. Very ill? I thought I already was very ill! Good news, though. A doctor at the hospital has learned a new technique they use in Europe where they treat the appendix, but leave it in. It works, the doctor said. When I do get surgery, it will be less intrusive and there will be a speedy recovery. They start me on the treatment and I get put in a bed for the night.

Fast forward, say, twelve hours. I have about thirty minutes of conscious memory here. I don't think they realized I was awake. My doctor is telling my parents "She's not responding to the treatment; if we don't perform surgery soon, she won't make it through the night." What does that even mean? I look around and I notice my brother and a few friends. Everyone looks scared. Surely, they're overreacting; I feel fine! Little did I know at the time, but so much morphine was pulsing through my system, that I wouldn't feel it if someone axed my arm off right then.

I closed my eyes, and when I woke up I was in some sort of waiting room. The Jungle Book was on the television, and my dad was sitting next to my bed watching it. He looked up at me and looked like he had been crying. "Everything is going to be okay, Jessie. They're just going to take your appendix out. They always do this with appendicitis." I believed him. But, what nobody was telling me was this: the fancy European treatment did not work with me. I did not respond to any of the medication. In fact, it was as if my body didn't even register any sort of treatment had been put into my body. So, the next day, when I should have been stabilizing, I was at the same level as someone with a day old untreated failed appendix. Because that's what I was. And when that happens, the infection, the one that essentially made your appendix explode, seeps into the rest of your organs and throughout your body. That's why I was sick. That's why I was dying. Because the infection from my appendicitis had spread to the rest of my vital organs. I wasn't just getting surgery. I was having emergency surgery through my abdomen while also being pumped.

So, when I woke up from my surgery in a room filled with get well soon cards, balloons, and flowers, I was horrified to find myself paralyzed. Well, I wasn't paralyzed. I only felt that way. The morphine was certainly weighing me down, but what I was feeling was the effects of my surgery. The emergency procedure that had cut through all of my abdominal muscles, rendering me without any abdominal muscle whatsoever. Basically, I wasn't even able to even sit up.

The next month was a horrible time of being bed ridden and having to re-learn how to walk and hold myself up. Not to mention the two stomach pumps that I had to empty three times a day. Emptying the still prevalent infection coursing through my body. Pumps that, eventually, had to be hand pulled out. You see, these pumps were inserted right under my belly button and they wrapped through all my guts and intestines. Yes, these were pulled out my stomach. I watched it happen. Wincing in pain and disgust. Oh, and there was the IV pump I had to drag around with me any time I was able to muster up the courage to move from one room to another. The IV went in through my left arm and was connected to a vital vein. It was explained to me that if I let any bubbles into my medicine before it pumped in, I could die. So, that was stressful.

Any way, that was probably way too much information, and if you just skimmed than you probably gathered I had appendicitis that required emergency surgery, leaving me unable to move. I'm not including a picture, for personal reasons. I am not ashamed of my scar, but I still do not want to take a picture of my gut for all of the internet to see. Haha. My scar will always be there. All three of them. One from the emergency surgery, and two from two separate stomach pumps. For a long time I was embarrassed of them. I thought they showed my body failing. You know, I don't really know what I thought. But as I've gotten older, I've realized that scars are beautiful representations of our struggles.

I would never try and make my scars disappear. And you shouldn't either! We have to love ourselves, and love our bodies. We are beautiful the way that we are, and we have to adore ourselves as much as we adore the bodies in the magazines we scour over. Believe me, we're perfect and beautiful, scars, pounds, and all!
Love and Luck,
Jessie :)

Thank you so much, Jessie, for helping me with The Story Behind the Scar series. Make sure to stop by her blog and say hi!

Hello from Paradise!

My family and I have safely arrived In the beautiful Costa Rica! I'm excited to start exploring our resort and sip on some fruity alcoholic drinks by the poolside on the days it doesn't rain.

It's also some time to catch up on my reading! Here's a list of the books I brought with me:

1. The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest by Stieg Larson
2.Persuasion by Jane Austen
3. Hey Whipple! Squeeze This! by Luke Sullivan
4. The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
5. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

I brought Perks and Hunger Games even though I've read them already because re-reading a book is just so rewarding when the book is so good!

Adios amigos!

Where did my internship go? (Long post, coming atcha)

Today was the last day of my internship. Wow. That's so strange to say. This summer just slipped straight through my fingertips.

It's weird to imagine that all the people and projects I have been on will continue to go on without me. I don't mean that in a "I'm the center of the universe" way, just that it's an odd feeling.

I've learned so much here... Not exactly the kinds of lessons you can put into lists. Or even into words.

In my exit interview I was asked if my experience here was what I expected, and I said I didn't know what I had expected. Looking back I think I had expectations I never really acknowledged, but are starting to become clear to me. I believed that this internship would help me to feel sure of what I want to do with my life, and that definitely is not what I'm walking away from this job with. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved my job. I love what I did all summer and would do it again in a heartbeat. But I definitely had my days where I just wasn't so sure. I worry that I'm trying to fit a square peg into a round hole by choosing art direction. My strength growing up was always my writing. I had an eye for art and shooting photography was one of my favorite things in the world, but when I think back to the beginning the first career I ever wanted for myself was to become an author. I was the one who won essay contests and had my papers read to the class, not the art kids I had always admired.
The truth is I don't have to choose. It's very possible to be successful at both art direction and copywriting. But eventually, I feel like I'll need to decide if I'm making my life more stressful by choosing to try and do what I wish I was better at, rather than helping myself excel at something that comes more naturally to me. I'm not trying to say I'm a terrible art director at all, I'm perfectly passable. But do I have the potential and ability to someday be the best? I don't know. Right now, I still won't be giving up. I'm young in the graphic design game and have so much more to learn before I can truly judge whether or not it's right for me. And truthfully it's what I love.

So for today, my vote is on perseverance. I choose to keep fighting to be better at it until the day I no longer find any joy in the work.
I know that this is a strange post to sum up my experience, but it's what was most prevalent on my mind all throughout my last day, and I felt I needed to capture the last day as it truly was.

I'll also never forget the amazing people I met and worked with. The other interns I worked are so driven, it's inspiring. And they're also some of the funniest people to be with. I'm happy I get to walk away from this with memories of trying to survive the intern project with Maddie, the hilarious brainstorming sessions with Taylor, an entire 45 minute Harry Potter conversation with Stacey, laughing at my horrible skill with an Exacto knife with Lindsey and literally everything that comes out of Nadia's mouth. An that's just the short list!
How did I luck out and get so many awesome coworkers?
Tomorrow morning the fam and I are off to Costa Rica so LOTS of packing to do tonight! Just a warning that the blog may not get used much while I'm away... Or maybe it will, no guarantees. I just plan to enjoy my time away. I do finally have the second part to my Story Behind the Scar series coming to you on Tuesday, so keep your eyes open for that :)
And closing with a picture of the War Room I spent FOREVER working on! I'd shar other angle of the room, but I'm not sure what I'm allowed to share and what I'm not.. So you get generic map wall for now. Have a great weekend everyone!

Words to Live By

Photo by my friend Miranda circa the High School years
People (including myself) tend to complain when things don't change for them. When something is bad, or they're tired of a certain thing continuing to happen to them, they can't understand why it just keeps happening. One thing I have to remind myself daily is that if I keep trying to do the same things over and over again, you will keep getting the same results. For example, say I have been trying to lose weight. I complain about hating the way my body looks, but continue my same daily routines. The only way to see a change is to make one. What have you been putting off changing in your life?

Liebster Award!

I'm sure many of you have noticed nominations for the Liebster Award going around the blogosphere recently. I'm so excited to say that Jessie from Young Georgia Love has nominated me! Thank you so much Jessie, it's quite the honor to have a wonderful blogger like yourself have faith in my itty bitty little bloggy :) If you haven't stopped by her blog before, she has a great little corner of the internet!
So first, I'm supposed to tell you 11 things about myself and then answer the 11 questions Jessie included in her post.

11 Things You May or May Not Already Know About Me
1. I'm in a long-term long-distance relationship with my high school sweetheart. I guess you could say that we like each other?
2. Blue Moon is (currently) my favorite beer. I love beer.
3. My birthday is my favorite holiday. It's kind of a big deal...
4. I absolutely adore elephants for reasons I don't even understand. They're just adorable and everything with elephant patterns must be mine.
5. I love the color pink. A lot of little girls do, I just never grew out of it.
6. Texas will ALWAYS be my home, no matter where I live.
7. Losing my first pug, Gracie, was one of the hardest things I've ever had to go through. I love my new little pups, but Grace has a special spot in my heart.
8. I AM SCARED TO DEATH OF NEEDLES. Getting shots are a nightmare for me, and no matter how hard I try not to I end up acting like a child in the doctor's office. Something about the puncturing of skin terrifies me.
9. I am an instagram-aholic. Follow me (lindsayweasley)
10. Harry Potter is my incredibly unhealthy obsession. I listen to it on audiobook while I work at my internship and before I go to bed each night, I talk about it daily, and I even read fanfiction sometimes. Sometimes I'm scared how nerdy I can be about Harry Potter.
11. I love making lists and plans. Therefore, I just had a blast making this list.
11 Questions from the wonderful Jessie of Young Georgia Love
1. What made you want to start blogging?
Well, I had admire blogs like A Beautiful Mess and The Dainty Squid for ages and loved seeing how people could just pour their creativity into a blog. It seemed so fun and so rewarding. I had tried multiple blogs before, but this is the first time I really feel like I'm getting into it!

2.What is the most detailed dream you've ever had?
Actually a majority of my dreams are really detailed! I used to have dreams that were so real they would wake me up. For example, when I was in high school I was a club volleyball player. Volleyball was my life, my every moment, so it was only natural for it to take over my dreams as well. I would dream of the rotations and when I would have a dream I was in a game I would be reaching out for the ball and it wouldn't ever touch me so I'd wake up in panic with my arms in the "bump" position and freaking out that I was missing some game somewhere... Weird stuff.

3. What is your favorite food?
Gah, picking favorites is always SO tough for me. I'm a pretty indecisive person. But here are my top few. I could eat popcorn every day and be totally happy. I also love putting avocado on pretty much anything. Chips and queso are a MUST for us Texans. But I guess if I HAD to pick only one, it may just be mashed potatoes made by my mom or roommate. They're the only two that have seemed to master them.

4. If you could do any one single thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Man, Jessie, you have got to stop making me pick one thing! As of right now I would have to say design work. This could easily change by tomorrow, but for today I want to be an art director/graphic designer. Although, my goal is not to be only one thing for my whole life.

5. Do you wish on stars or at 11:11, if so what for?
I rarely do, but my friend Lexx ALWAYS does. And when I do, I can't tell you what I wish for because then it won't come true sillies!

6. Are you a dog person or a cat person?
Definitely a dog person. More like a pug person. To be most accurate, I am a pug person who loves to use the word "meow" for no reason.

7. What type of phone do you have?
    iPhone4

8. You're going on a vacation to the beach. What do you pack?
As many cute swimsuits, cover ups, and flip flops as possible. Possibly my hat to keep my scalp from burning and I guess I'll throw in some sunscreen. I don't burn easily but I LOVE tanning.

9. What flavor gum do you prefer?
Just the general spearmint flavors. Lame, I know. But I love anything minty.

10. What was the last book you read?
This is a complex question for me actually. I read a book about HTML/CSS but I hardly count that as a book. I also listen to Harry Potter audiobook at work each day and just finished Goblet of Fire. But the last book I held in my hands to read was The Girl Who Played With Fire.

11. Where's your favorite place in the world?
Honestly, it's home. Because being with my brother, my parents, my boyfriend, and my pugs is what is most important to me.
Now time to nominate 11 people with less that 200 followers for the Liebster Award!

1. Christi Lynn at Love, Christi Lynn
2. Sammantha at Dysfunctional Ever After
3. Mrs. Grow at Love the Grows
4. Alexis/Lexx at Daydreams and Romance (She's SUPER new so say stop by and say hi!)
5. Kim at Kimberley's Quests
6. Shell at Kitty and Buck
7. Margo and Carrie at Craft Pond
8. Jess at Time for Tea
9. Courtney at Chase All Your Dreams
10. Katelyn at Written by a Ginger
11. Kate at Kate B Mcleod

Now for MY 11 questions that these lovely ladies must answer!

1. What is your favorite blog that you read?
2. Why did you decide to start blogging?
3. If money and skill did not exist or matter, what career would you choose for yourself?
4. Favorite animal? Why?
5. Books versus movies? Which would you pick if you could only have one?
6. If you could change your name, what would you change it to?
7. Do you drink alcohol? If so, what's your favorite drink? If not, what's your favorite non-alcoholic drink?
8. If you could only shop in one clothing store for the rest of your life, what would it be?
9. What would your PERFECT day be like?
10. If you could meet the celebrity of your dreams, who would it be and why?
11. Do you have a quote or mantra you live by? If so, what is it? If not, why don't you?

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend xo lindsay

HE'S HERE!

I finally get to be with my boy this weekend. After a truly awful terrible no good very bad week, this is really what I needed. What I've needed for much too long now. I got to spend time with him last night and I'll be spending more with him all day today! It is so crazy how only 5 minutes into seeing him my attitude was like that of a completely new person. It was as if my bad week had never happened.

I'm really excited that I'm going to be forcing him to watch The Prestige today! I'm sure plenty of you saw it in 2006 when it came out, but I only discovered this fabulous thing a couple weeks ago and I've been itching for a re-watch ever since. If you haven't seen this movie and you like movies that can make you say "holy moly I never saw that coming" (I never say holy moly? Not sure why that was my word choice...) then you MUST see The Prestige.

We'll also probably grab lunch at one of our favorite places in town and just enjoy feeling like we live in the same city again. We go to school in different places, but usually we always have our summers. This is out first summer he has had to stay away to finish his classes. It's been really weird for us and I'm ready for a taste of normal. Well, as normal as we can be...

Any other long-distancers/long-termers out there? What are some of everyone's favorite things to do when you dedicate a full day to you better half? I'd love suggestions! :) Have a beautiful day, lovelies.

A Rant Full of Shock

This morning I woke up to the awful news about the Batman premiere in Colorado. For those of you who aren't aware of the situation, you can catch up on the events of it here.
I'm in shock. Truly. What truly gave me a heart attack when my mom began to tell me what had happened was knowing my little brother had gone to that same midnight premiere here. I've always loved midnight premieres and was so excited he would be going and enjoying one with his friends. My brother is 4 years younger than me, but I would still consider him one of my best friends. I cannot even begin to imagine what I would do if he had been at the theatre where this happened.
You expect to be safe when you go to the movies, it's not somewhere you'd ever consider to be dangerous. My heart is so broken for the people who went to the movie last night thinking this same thing. And their families. How do you see something like this coming? If the movies aren't safe, where can we go and not be vulnerable to events like this? Where are we ever safe?

It's so frustrating to keep seeing horrible events like this happen again and again and again. I know that's life and it will always happen, but it kills me. I hate feeling my faith in humanity diminish little by little because there are lunatics out there who can't keep themselves from ruining lives. I'm just a little sick of it, and am just having a hard time understanding it all right now.

Please keep those involved in your thoughts and prayers.

So You Had a Bad Day?

When I created this blog, my mission was to keep myself focused on what the lovely things are, not the things that make me mad or upset. I spend enough time complaining during my day already and needed something that could bring me back to my happy place. Today has already been a day filled with moping, frustration, and banging my head against a wall (thank you, internship) and it's only Tuesday for goodness sake! So I just wanna post about some things that make me happy and can get me excited! Time to fight back again frustration and tiredness, huzzah!

1. Cartoons
FACT: I am actually a child. But seriously. When searching Netflix, my roomie and I almost always end up in the "family" genre which is just the code word for "hey you guys are 5 years old."

One of our FAVORITE cartoons to put on is Phineas and Ferb. If you're a cartoon lover and haven't seen it yet, shame on you. Phineas and Ferb are genius step-brothers whose whole goal is to never waste a day of their summer vacation, so they make crazy inventions/games. Their sister's mission in life to to "bust them" and their pet platypus, Perry the Platypus, is a secret agent who fights the evil Dr. Doofensmirtz. I would actually love to dress like them for halloween with my roommate, but that would mean convincing her to actually come out with me for halloween.

This Disney Princess story has completely won my heart. I literally watch it all the time. The plot is simply adorable and the humor is never ending. I also LOVE the music. Mandy Moore sings like an angel, the lyrics are great, and I'm officially obsessed with floating lanterns. Honestly there aren't enough words to explain how perfect it is, so I won't even try any longer.

2. Harry Potter
There is nothing that can make me happier than Harry Potter. That's dramatic, but it's true. And it's great perspective when you're having a bad day. If Harry could deal with the stress of fighting Voldemort, I think I can live through the stress of a work assignment.

But even with the dramatic difference in situation, it's so relatable. Sometimes when I'm upset I straight to The Order of the Phoenix (book 5) because it's full of angst Harry. Harry and I complain and whine together and by the end of it I actually feel SO much better. Weird, but true story.

I could literally write thousands of posts about Harry Potter alone, but I won't drive you crazy with that. Maybe in the future I'll dedicate some posts to HP but have a little more focus than just a "Harry, I love you" rant like this one.

3. Naps
I clearly need one.

Color Me Monday

I'm only two weeks away from my family vacation in Costa Rica, so it's safe to say I have the beach on my mind right now. I'm loving this paradise-like color palette this Monday, and am hoping it can keep me motivated as I finish off my internship! love, lindsay

Elevator Outfit Post

I have this silly little habit of taking mirror pictures of myself. Don't act like you never do it too! But I do it on almost a daily basis. I love taking pictures of outfits I'm proud of and sending them to friends. Sometimes in my rush to get to my internship in the morning I forget to get my mirror pic in, so I take pictures of myself in the elevator at work... Ridiculous? Maybe. But it's kind of fun to try and get as many pictures as I can before they elevator stops and people get on with you! I thought I'd share a few of my elevator outfit pictures just for fun.

Long Distance Blues

Hello there, lovelies. Don't have a lot to say today except I'm currently suffering pretty hard from the long-distance blues. Haven't seen the boyfriend in person for much too long, and it really really sucks. Long distance is something we've been doing for ages now (about 4 of 6 years) so it's no stranger to us. I can go a long time being content with it, but eventually you just hit a wall and need that in-person connection. I mean, look how cute he is! Wouldn't you want to see that everyday? I should be seeing him next weekend though if everything works out, so cross your fingers for us!

The GREAT news is the I get to see my friend Lexx! She is visiting me this weekend and the excitement of that is already starting to overcome the sad part in me. We'll get plenty of Vitamin D while bronzing by the pool and drink more beer than we should, so I know this blue shall pass!

I hope you're having a Happy Friday! Any awesome weekend plans ahead of you?

I Want You

I hope you're all have a very happy Thursday my lovelies! This morning I was browsing through blogs and ran across Design Love Fest's post about visiting the Poketo store in LA. I think I'm in love.
Check these out Here

Their selection of planners is got me all worked up! Fun fact about me: I LOVE buying school supplies. Pretty journals thrill me. A cute planner can make me hyperventilate. Straight up nerdy, I know. I've always been a list maker and there's just something therapeutic and relaxing about physically putting your plans in pen.

My long term plans have always been far more important to me than short term. Let's just say that waiting on myself to really decide and commit to which college I wanted to attend drove me nearly insane. I hated that I couldn't picture my life for the next year or start planning for it yet. It's safe to say this is a trait I get from my mom. My short term plans aren't as much of a bother to me unless it's for a deadline of sorts. For example, it doesn't bother me that I don't have plans set in stone for what I'll be doing next week, but I'm already becoming impatient with waiting on my syllabi so I can plan my full semester and figure out my open weekends.

So, since I'll be back in my college town in only 3 weeks and 3 days (already? seriously?) it's time for the hunt for this year's planner! Wanna help me pick one? And I think I may choose one from Poketo, here are some of my favorites.

1. Draw Your Tomorrow Planner
Here

I can never decide if I favor larger planners or smaller planners.. I like that larger planners give me way more space to make my plans and doodle in the margins, but smaller planners are lighter and fit in everything. What I love most about the Draw Your Tomorrow Planner is the spaces it has just for drawing and spaces dedicated to lists. I LOVE LISTS. I can definitely seem myself making lots of To-Do Lists (oftentimes of things I won't actually do...) during my classes. It also has both monthly and weekly planning spaces. I think I like the blue or the grey best. Or maybe yellow. So hard to decide!

2. Perfect Mini Planner II
Here

The Perfect Mini Planner is an adorable option if I decide to go small this year. I love that each day has a dotted line down the middle, giving it two separate white squares to write in. I imagine I would use the left side for school assignments and the right for other obligation like my sorority or fun night plans! The Perfect Mini Planner II also has its adorable predecessor, Perfect Mini Planner (pictured at top of this post), and its successor, Perfect Mini Planner III, to consider. All of them have gorgeous covers, but I'm particularly smitten with the coral and mint triangle pattern.

3. Clover Planner
Here
The clover planner is an organizer's dream. It has the yearly calendar, monthly calendar, and weekly calendar. SO much long term space! But my favorite part of it is that it has nice little folder flaps inside. I feel like I could actually fit my life inside of this little beauty.. But I worry that a lot of the extra stuff involved with this would go to waste. It's a decision between going minimal or going all out in this case.

4. Stick-Up Weekly Calendar
Here
This isn't practical for an everyday planner, but I think this little sticky-note calendar would make for a great blog planner! It can be stuck on your computer so you can remember what you should be working on for your blog each day. Forcing yourself to plan the full week for your blog makes it easier not to forget about it or procrastinate. Do any of you guys use blog planners? What methods do you use to plan your blogs? I'm still learning this process and would love any ideas, feedback, or links to posts that would help!

What's your favorite Poketo planner? I'd love to know which one you think I should get and why!

The Lovely Things Are...

My life has been so wonderful recently. I have a great internship, an amazing family, a boyfriend I love more than you can imagine, and truly awesome friends. I'm so blessed in this life and think it's important to remind myself what all the lovely things are... and to always appreciate them. Even the silly lovely things. I hope you can take a moment to really think about all those wonderful little details of your life right now too!

What are the lovely things that surround you right now? What are you most thankful for? love, lindsay
